Michael
is the owner of Remsen Studios and has been a porcelain potter for
over 20 years. Michael first caught the pottery bug when he
took a
ceramics class in high school.
His
initial love of the art carried him through the University of Maine,
where he earned a degree in sculpture and a minor in ceramics.
"I love the metamorphosis that takes place when I take a seemingly
lifeless clump of clay and transform it into something that will
outlive me. I love the symmetry I can obtain on the potter's wheel, and
the changes the pieces go through."
All his
pieces are very functional, but also with all his bright colors a
wonderful eye catcher and display piece.
Michael
mixes all his own clay, glazes and chemicals so he will know exactly
what will happen to the piece when it's fired in the kiln. He creates
the clay canvas and then he paints it. He makes everything from a mug
to a $2.500 huge floor urn. His favorite design is the fish, Rockport,
Maine is located right on the Atlantic and besides his obsession for
pottery Michael is a avid fisherman.
